Medical office assistants play a key role in hospitals and
clinics. They liaise with doctors and patients and help them understand the
medical problem and the treatment procedures. The first person, whom the
patient interacts to, in this complicated medical world, is the medical office assistant (MOA). They guide the patients to follow the required procedure and
also help the doctors with the lab reports, various charts and medical
analysis. They are the point of contact for the hospital’s office, to deal with
billing and insurance claims. A MOA is expected to perform various roles
effectively. A small clinic is totally dependent on MOA while large hospitals
have MOA’s for specialized work. A MOA is widely responsible for patient’s
satisfaction of the medical services.
The role of a MOA is to interact with patients, doctors, lab
technicians, front office and clearly understand the requirements. The MOA then
guides the people according to their needs. They also help in conducting
various medical tests, preparing reports and assist the doctor during medical
examination. Multi tasking abilities is essential to become a successful MOA.
An under graduate degree or an equivalent diploma is
required to pursue a MOA career. But most of the clinics and hospitals prefer
that the MOA’s have a degree or certificate in medical terms, human anatomy
along with accounts and insurance knowledge. It is a must that they should be
proficient in record keeping as well. To become a certified medical office
assistant, it is necessary to attend the certificate course and training
program offered by various colleges and universities. Apart from providing
theoretical knowledge, these courses provide practical training which is much
required to become a successful MOA.
Some of the states mandate that the MOA’s register
themselves with the government council in order to obtain a state license. This
helps them become certified and licensed MOA’s. Hospitals and clinics prefer
certified MOA’s over other candidates. This certification will definitely
guarantee a job and one can get an opportunity to prove their skills. The need
for MOA is rising every day, making it a prospective career option.
Apart from the certificate, medical office assistants need
to have a pleasing personality and good communication skills. They should be
able to understand the patient’s needs and should provide proper guidance. They
should keep themselves updated with the latest advancements in the medical
field. They should also possess good computer skills to process reports and to
maintain records. Knowledge of billing software and insurance programs is
essential. Learning has to be a continuous process to be a good medical office
assistant. High focus and concentration levels are required to perform the role
efficiently. Excellent confidence level can help one become a good MOA.
